Unlock PDF
Remove the protection from a PDF that you own or have permission to unlock, so it opens without a password or can be printed, copied and edited. You supply the password; this tool never guesses or cracks one. Everything runs in your browser and the file is never uploaded.

PDF only, up to 200 MB. One file at a time.
Your files stay in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, saved or logged.
How Unlock PDF works
A PDF can be protected in two ways. A password to open means the content is encrypted and cannot be read without it. Restrictions mean the file opens freely but asks programs not to allow printing, copying or editing. The tool first examines the file and tells you which of the two applies, then offers only what makes sense.
With a password to open, you type the password and the tool makes a single attempt with exactly that password, using qpdf compiled to run on your device. If it is wrong, you are told so and nothing is produced. There is no list of passwords, no repeated attempts and no recovery: this is a tool for people who hold the password, not for finding one.
Before anything is removed you confirm that the document is yours or that you have permission from its owner. The result is a new PDF without encryption; your original file is never changed. Removing protection from a document you have no right to open may be illegal, and the choice to proceed is yours.
How to use it
- Select the protected PDF, or drop it on the area at the top of the tool. The tool tells you how it is protected.
- If it asks for a password to open, type it.
- Tick the box confirming that you own the document or have permission to unlock it.
- Choose Unlock PDF and download the result.
Example
| How the file is protected | What the tool does |
|---|---|
| Not protected | Nothing to remove: the file already opens freely and has no restrictions. |
| Opens freely, but printing, copying or editing is restricted | Removed without a password, after you confirm you may. |
| Asks for a password to open | Removed once you give the right password, with a single attempt. |
Limits and good to know
- The PDF can be up to 200 MB. The document is held in your device’s memory while it works.
- A password you do not have cannot be worked around: the tool makes one attempt with the password you type and never tries others. If you have forgotten it, ask the person who protected the document.
- PDFs protected with a digital certificate instead of a password are not supported. Bookmarks, form fields and links of the original are kept.
Frequently asked questions
Can this tool recover or crack a lost password?
No, and it does not try. It uses only the password you type, once. If you do not have the password and are entitled to the document, ask whoever created or sent it. A tool that guessed passwords would also be misused against other people’s files, which is not what PDFStrong is for.
Is it legal to remove a PDF’s protection?
It depends on whose document it is and where you live. Unlocking your own file, or one for which you have the owner’s permission, is normal. Removing protection to get around someone else’s restrictions may breach their rights or the law. That is why you are asked to confirm before the protection is removed.
What is the difference between a password and restrictions?
A password to open means nobody can read the file without it. Restrictions mean anyone can open the file but programs are asked not to print, copy or edit it. The second kind can be removed without a password; the first cannot be removed without the right one.
Is my PDF or password uploaded?
No. Both stay in your browser tab, and the password is emptied from the page once the file is unlocked. You can check it in your browser’s developer tools: the Network tab shows no upload while you unlock.
Why does it say the PDF is not protected?
Because it opens without a password and has no restrictions, so there is nothing to remove. If your PDF viewer still shows a lock, the file may simply carry a digital signature, which is a different thing and is not touched by this tool.
